A well-designed database avoids duplicated data, errors and slow queries. In one day the team learns to turn requirements into an Entity-Relationship schema, translate it into a relational model, and use SQL to create tables and query data.
The course is hands-on: every concept goes through an exercise on real cases, with the solution discussed together. Programme, examples and DBMS are adapted to the tools already used in the company.
- Duration: 8 hours in 1 day
- Format: on site at your premises or online, in 2 half-days of 4 hours.
- Group: up to 10 people
- Investment: from €1,000 + VAT for the team on site, from €800 + VAT online. Travel outside the province of Turin not included. Tailored quote.
What you will be able to do
- turn an application’s requirements into a correct Entity-Relationship schema
- translate the ER schema into relational tables with keys and integrity constraints
- create and modify tables, and insert, update and delete data in SQL
- write queries with filters, sorting, joins and aggregate functions
- recognise the most common design mistakes, such as redundancy and poorly modelled relationships
Programme
Morning · Designing the database (4 hours)
- Databases and DBMSs: what they are for and the design phases (conceptual, logical, physical)
- The Entity-Relationship model: entities, relationships, cardinality, attributes, identifiers and generalisations
- From requirements to an ER schema: a method to analyse a text and build the schema
- The relational model: tables, primary keys and referential integrity constraints
- From the ER schema to the logical model: restructuring and translation, with worked exercises
Afternoon · The SQL language (4 hours)
- Creating and altering tables: data types, keys and constraints (CREATE, ALTER, DROP)
- Manipulating data: INSERT, UPDATE and DELETE
- Querying data with SELECT: conditions, sorting, NULL values and text search
- Joins between tables, aggregate functions and grouping (GROUP BY, HAVING)
- An overview of nested queries and set operators
- Final exercise: from the requirements text to a working database, with the main queries
Advanced topics (complex queries, views, triggers, optimisation and data warehouses) do not fit in the 8 hours: they can be added in a dedicated course on request.
Who it is for
IT staff, developers, analysts and department heads in private companies and public administrations who need to design, read or query a relational database, and anyone who wants a solid foundation before moving to more advanced tools.
Requirements
No prior knowledge of databases or programming is needed. Each participant brings a personal computer with a stable connection (Windows, Linux or macOS) on which to install a DBMS and an SQL client, with the trainer’s support.
What is included
- Course material in digital format
- ER modelling and SQL exercises with solutions
- Technical support for installing and configuring the software
- For online delivery: a setup guide and a technical test before the start
Software used
An open-source relational DBMS and a graphical client to write queries, both free. If the team already uses another DBMS, the examples are adapted to it.
Frequently asked questions
Can the course be delivered online?
Yes. The online course is organised in 2 half-days of 4 hours, with a technical test before the start and an installation guide for participants. On site it takes place at the client’s premises (8 hours in 1 day).
Which DBMS is used?
The course uses a free, open-source relational DBMS. SQL is the same across systems, with minor syntax differences: if the team already uses another DBMS, the examples are adapted to it.
Can the programme be adapted?
Yes. The programme above is the 8-hour baseline: level, examples and case studies are chosen together with the team, including starting from one of the company’s own databases.
How much does it cost, and what about travel?
From €1,000 + VAT for a team of up to 10 people on site, from €800 + VAT online. Travel outside the province of Turin is not included and is reimbursed separately. Tailored quote.
